During Key Stage 2 pupils start to develop their understanding of the world about them in a more scientific way, formulating ideas about their place within the universe and the effects of mankind on their world. Working Scientifically continues to be a core component of the course offered at Robert Bloomfield and we take time throughout all of the Science Modules to work in various forms of communication.  Paired work, group work and ICT are all used to encourage students to develop their personal skills as a scientist. Students are taught Science in form groups. All Key Stage 2 classes have access to a laboratory for at least one of their 3 periods of Science per week.  All Key Stage 3 lessons are based in the science labs.

In Key Stage 3, pupils build on their prior scientific knowledge and understanding to make connections between different areas of science. They use scientific ideas and models to explain phenomena and events and to understand a range of familiar applications of science and their own science knowledge. They think about the positive and negative effects of scientific and technological developments on the environment. They take into account other pupils views and understand why opinions may differ. They carry out lab-based investigations, evaluating their own work and the work of others. They learn how scientists work together on present day scientific developments and about the importance of experimental evidence in supporting scientific ideas.

The Science Course is divided into core modules for each year, with different classes completing the modules in a different order, allowing greater use of the resources we have as a department and school. In Key Stage 3, there are 3 modules across each academic term. Pupils will have tasks to carry out in each topic that will be assessed to show the progress of pupils. They will also have a more traditional type test at the end of each topic, and at the end of the term to show that key scientific knowledge is retained.
