Modern Foreign Languages (French)

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is a very important aspect of all our pupils’ curriculum, and will ultimately figure in the range of subjects students will take in Upper School.

At Robert Bloomfield Academy, all pupils learn French. In years 5 and 6 they have one hour per week and in year 7 and 8 this increases to 3 hours per fortnight. The four core skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing are used throughout the curriculum.

In Year 5, pupils build on work covered in lower schools by learning to introduce themselves and ask and give personal details e.g. name, age, birthdays, etc. They learn numbers up to 30, months of the year, descriptions of themselves and their family and how to express likes and dislikes.

In year 6, pupils learn to talk about school, clothes and uniform, sports and hobbies including use of technology, what they have for breakfast, and how to give opinions and reasons for their opinions.

In Year 7, topics include: describing where you live, places in town, ordering food and drink at a café and at the market, traditional French food, visiting Paris, festivals, travel, and past holidays. Communication in the classroom continues to develop, and grammar is explored more deeply, including the introduction of the future and past tenses.

In year 8, topics include: TV programmes, online activities , describing where you live, daily routine and chores, sports, keeping healthy, illness and injuries. We complete the year with the French diploma. The emphasis in year 8 is on extending vocabulary, using two to three tenses in the same piece of work, and creating extended, complex sentences.

We strongly encourage children to practice using foreign languages at home. Here are some websites, that the children will find useful and which will provide a multitude of games and fun activities.
